Case Studies
1. Canadian Coast Guard - Fox Harbour,
Newfoundland, Canada.
Varcon
was presented with the challenging task of completing a structural
inspection of the 720' steel frame, in addition to inspecting the
porcelain insulators and guy links. In order to complete this work,
a system was designed which comprised a lightweight aluminum man
cage, a fail-safe trolley system, a system of redundant safety cables
and a certified winch. The innovative approach resulted in safe
completion of this dangerous and difficult task in a very efficient
manner.
2. NorthwesTel - Northwest Territories/Yukon, Canada.
Development of 11 new digital microwave sites in Canada's north. Construction involved significant challenges with regard to remoteness, short construction seasons, permafrost, and environmental issues. Varcon's duties included development of technical specifications, structural verification of tower designs, and project management pertaining to the construction of roads, buildings, cycle charge power systems, fuel storage systems, and towers.
3. Canadian Broadcasting Corporation -
Manitoba, Canada.
Design of vibration dampening system for a 1062' guyed, heavily
loaded broadcast tower for Canada's largest broadcaster. Work included
an assessment of the cause of the vibration and development of a
viable long-term solution.
