Members of the Varcon team offer a diverse background when it comes to their involvement in engineering projects. They have been directly associated with many challenging projects across Canada. These projects cover the spectrum in terms of difficulty and complexity. We have attempted to highlight a few below.

Aliant Telecom - NL, NB, NS & PEI. Tower inspections and routine maintenance supervision for many hundreds of sites.

CBC - SK, MB, NL & ON. Tower inspections and routine maintenance for over 40 sites.

CBC - Jarvis Street, Toronto, ON. Safety Assessment of 540' self-support tower.

CBC (ON & NL) & NorthwesTel - Tower Safety Seminars. Initiated, organized and presented by Varcon Inc.

Canadian Coast Guard - Cape Race, NL. Failure investigation of 1380' Loran C tower.

Bell Canada - ON. Structural inspection, maintenance rigger supervision, project management & cost controls for over 100 sites throughout the province.

NewTel Communications - Cross Island Digital Project. Development of 11 new microwave sites, including roads, buildings, cycle charge power systems, fuel storage systems, and towers. Construction involved sites where the challenges included very difficult access and helicopter transportation.

NewTel Communications - Off Island Digital Project. Development of 4 new microwave sites in Western NL, including roads, buildings, cycle charge power systems, fuel storage systems, and towers.

NorthwesTel Inc. - Dempster Digital Project. Development of 11 new digital microwave sites in remote, environmentally-sensitive areas along the Dempster Highway.

AT&T Canada - New Digital Sites. Development of 16 new digital microwave sites across Newfoundland.

NewTel Communications - Retrofit of Labrador Microwave Sites. Retrofit of 12 remote microwave sites in Southern and Northern Coastal Labrador. Work included building upgrades, helicopter pads, emergency accommodation units, fuel system upgrades, and cycle charge power systems.

Canadian Coast Guard - Fox Harbour, Labrador. Engineering inspections of 722' Loran C tower. Work included detailed structural inspection, measurement and adjustment of guy tensions and vertical alignment, inspection of guys and insulators using a specially designed man cage system, and detailed engineering reports.

Canadian Coast Guard - Engineering inspections of Loran C towers at Cape Race, NF (1345'), Comfort Cove, NF (623'), Port Hardy, BC(499'), Williams Lake, BC(627').

Canadian Broadcasting Corp.- Belleville, ON. Structural analysis and reinforcement design, 584' guyed broadcast tower.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp.- Botwood, NL. Structural analysis and reinforcement design, 610' guyed broadcast tower.

Canadian Coast Guard - Fox Harbour, Labrador. Evaluation of vibration occurrences 722' Loran C tower.

Northern Radar - St. John's, NL. Design of new radar array. Work on this first of a kind system included complete structural design, including fabrication drawings.

Bell Canada - ON Inspection of several hundred towers, including supervision of maintenance crew and submission of detailed engineering reports.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp.- Moncton, NB. New 500' broadcast tower. Technical specification, tender evaluation, design analysis, quality control, acceptance inspection.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp. - New 220' broadcast towers at Marystown, NL and Chibougamau, QC. Technical specification, tender evaluation, design analysis, quality control, acceptance inspection.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp. - Placentia, NL. Structural analysis, reinforcement design, load optimization, quality control and acceptance inspection for existing 300' guyed broadcast tower.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp.- Stephenville, NL. New 171' broadcast tower. Technical specification, tender evaluation, design analysis, quality control, acceptance inspection.

NBTel - Redmondville and Cote d'Or, NB . New 300' guyed towers. Technical specification, tender evaluation, design analysis, quality control, acceptance inspection.

NewTel Communications - Long Point, NL. New 154' guyed tower. Technical specification, tender evaluation, design analysis, quality control, acceptance inspection.

Canadian Coast Guard - Engineering and inspection of MF, CW, VHF, DGPS and Radar towers.

Structural assessment of several hundred towers and foundation systems to verify conformance with the strength requirements of the Canadian tower standard, CSA S37.

Canadian Coast Guard - Freshwater Hill, NL. New 250' guyed tower - Technical specification, tender evaluation, design analysis, quality control, acceptance inspection.

Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro. Ten new 300' microwave tower sites in Eastern NL. Technical specification, tender evaluation, design analysis, quality control, acceptance inspection.

NorthwesTel Inc. - Maintenance Inspections of towers in various locations throughout YK, NWT and BC.

Aliant Telecom Inc - Prime Consultants for project management and implementation of 150 new CDMA cellular sites across the Maritimes. Completed detailed specifications, contract administration, site selection and development and professional tower engineering services.

MTS Allstream Inc - Implemented "new to industry" corrosion assessments on a selection of towers in MB. Individual site assessments were completed in conjunction with CSA S37 tower inspections with more detailed sub-surface anchor investigations being completed. Recommendations included site-specific cathodic protection designs to combat inherent corrosive soil conditions and anchor upgrades.
